Ode to Céline Dion
Canadian superstar emerges from illness to sing at the Olympics Opening Ceremony

Did you watch the Olympics opening ceremony?
It’s all people are talking about.
I watched it from the comfort of my friend Jenny’s home in Alexandria, VA, where I’ve been staying the past several days (thanks, Jenny!).
There is so much I can say about the opening ceremony. I found it to be a fun showcase of France’s history and culture. The scene of Dionysus got a lot of attention, especially the guy in blue (look up the comments on social media).
But what I really loved was the performance by Céline Dion.
Now, I’ve never been a big fan of Celine’s music; it’s just not my preferred genre. But I’ve watched her in interviews ever since her earlier days when her English was rusty (she grew up in Québec, Canada). As she grew in popularity and did more interviews, she revealed a very funny, lively personality. There are some celebrities you just want to hang out with, and I’d say she’s one of them.

Four years ago, Céline Dion had to leave her public life after she fell ill with a terrible disease known as Stiff-person Syndrome. There’s a documentary that just came out called “I Am: Celine Dion”. To be honest, I’m hesitant to watch it because I’m sure I’d need a box of tissues by my side. It’s hard to watch anyone with a personality like hers be reduced to a shell of herself.
So when I saw her standing on the Eiffel Tower, dressed in a beautiful white Dior gown, singing “L’Hymne de L’amour” — made famous by Edith Piaf — it was a beautiful moment to witness.
The day after her spectacular performance, Céline Dion left Paris. But not without posting a lovely photo and message of thanks to the City of Light.
Wow, what a night. Thanks to everyone at @Paris2024, @Olympics and @Dior who helped make this dream come true. And now, it’s already time to go! I will miss you Paris! - Celine xx…
Normally I wouldn’t write about this kind of topic, but I know the Olympics are really all there is to talk about at the moment (a nice distraction from politics). So I wanted to keep it moving with the Olympic spirit.
