Once in a while, in doing my research, I discover that some well-known Americans traveled to Paris during my favorite period, between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
It’s nice to see his parents’ effort paid off, having come from a more conservative background. They went out of their way to send him to Europe at such an early age through the church.
It’s a nice little tidbit to hold onto when viewing his later work. It informs his eagle eye for painting people and their interior dialogues.
Yes, he was quite young and as someone who lived abroad in her younger years, I can attest to the influence it has later in life. I’m glad he had that opportunity!
Jenn, I’m fairly new to Substack, and what you’re creating here is deeply inspiring. I began writing short stories and posting here during a recent long stay in France, so discovering your thoughtful research and the way you bring artists’ work to life really resonates with me. Thank you for the care and attention you place into what you share.
Hi Sheila! Thank you so very much for your message. Substack is a lot of fun and allows me to share my research and obsessions with readers when it comes to Old Paris and France!
Edward Hopper has slowly become one of my favorite's because of Substack. I am forever grateful for the people who spread the work of artists, thank you!!
Hopper is one of my favorites but I have never seen this collection. Thanks so much for sharing, loved this!
Thanks! It was a real treat to find them!

I’m so glad to hear that! Thank you Briana. 😊
I love Hopper too and have seen quite a bit of his work at the Whitney. But I wasn't aware of the Paris connection. Another fabulous post!
I only discovered these by accident and I’m so glad I did. What a treasure!
